This being our first visit to Brown County, I wonder what took us so long to visit this beautiful area of Indiana. It is located approximately one hour south of Indianapolis but couldn't be a more different environment. The area is rural, hilly with lots of trees, and not a corn or bean field in sight. The court house is located in a town called Nashville. The town is very quaint and caters to visitors. The shops that pack every nook and cranny on every street and alley are too numerous for one to see them all. The court house is the least ornate of ones we have visited so far. I will predict that we do not see one less elaborate. According to the book, "The Magnificent 92" by Jon Dilts, the original court house burned down in 1873. The county wished to replace it with one that was inexpensive, solid, useful, and straightforward. I think that is what we see here today.
The staircases above are not typical of Indiana architecture. Stairways are usually inside of the building or covered. Snow and icy conditions in the winter make exterior staircase slippery.
The trend at each courthouse seems to be a war memorial. I like the sign in front that states it is hallowed ground.
